Healthy Eating Is Not Rocket Science.

Today many people are realizing it's important to eat healthy. Exercise is important as well. Put them together and there is a good chance you can live much longer, and be more active in your golden years. Being old does not mean giving up.

I for one want to be active as possible when I get older. Right now I am 54 years old. And I work with the elderly. And it seems they don't want to do anything. I don't want to be like that.

The last few years I have really stepped up my eating habits, not that they were to bad before. I have always exercised. I don't want my body to get stiff, and I don't want to slow down and be tired all the time.

There is no real set plan on how to eat healthy. I enjoy making a fruit smoothie everyday. And it always includes a banana, yogurt, almond milk or juice, and wheat germ. I also like cream of wheat or eggs for breakfast. I eat mushrooms once a week, as well as shrimp and scallops. I like chicken a lot. I don't eat much beef. I eat plenty of fresh spinach, cherry tomatoes , broccoli, onions, green bell peppers, potatoes with the skins on, there is vitamins in the skins. I love all types of fresh fruit. And my favorite fruits are blueberries, strawberries, bananas, cantaloupe, apples, and Mandarin oranges, to name a few. I also eat lots of nuts and seeds. I love all the varieties of nuts, and they are really good for you, though they are high in fat, but better than chips and other snack foods.

And what I don't believe in is low fat and no fat foods. When you take something out, you need to add something, and usually that is sugar. Besides they taste really nasty with no real flavor. And if I am going to eat Cream Cheese and Cottage Cheese, darn it I want the real thing! Also for instance it is not good for diabetics to have this type of packaged salad dressing, as it is higher in sugar content. In general it is always a good idea to read the labels on products.



And many super foods can ward off some health conditions, like heart disease, and some cancers. If you are thinking of trying to eat better foods, just google the healthy foods you like, and you will find a wealth of info. And once you start eating better, you will feel better, and have more energy. Another thing to take note of, is don't think just by taking a vitamin pill,that it will do the trick and make you feel better. You need the real thing, and that is to get it from the foods we eat. Also try to limit deep fried foods, as it clogs the arteries.
And drink plenty of water. I know we hear this all the time, but it is true, especially for diabetics. Water hydrates the skin, helps plump up wrinkles, and flushes out the system. And Cranberry juice is really good for you as well. It helps with the urinary track.

Well this is just a few of my suggestions for staying healthy.

Spring Is In The Air !

I am so excited! Spring is right around the corner. And this year I have a new home with a big yard.
I can't wait to get out there and plant a flower garden as well as a vegetable garden.

I also have a cute little front yard with a huge tree, with an old fashioned wrought iron fence. Which I plan on putting some cute lawn ornaments in the front yard. 

I am told we have a pear tree and grape vines in our yard. Humm I wonder if I should learn how to make homemade wine, lol. 
I am looking forward to all the great backyard BBQ's that we are going to have, as well as sitting out on my front porch and relaxing.

I am also looking forward to finding out what kind of bushes that will be growing in my backyard. I really hope there will be a lilac bush, because they are my favorite! I just wish spring would hurry up already and get here. I want to get my hands dirty planting everything. The only part I don't like, is weeding the garden, such back breaking work.

When Nice Bosses Become Mean.

I have been at my job for 7 years now. When I first started my job my boss was a really nice guy, but over the years he has changed. He seems to find reasons to pick on the staff.
First I would like to say I work in a small home for independent senior citizens. We have one full time cook and 2 part time cooks, and 2 housekeepers, and 3 kitchen aids. I am a part time cook and weekend manager when he goes away, as he lives at the home during the week.

Anyway the last few years he has really been being mean to the head cook. She has been there for over 30 years, and she is almost 70 years old. He says really mean and hateful things to her, as well as blames everything on her. Especially when it comes to the grocery list and menu.

He also has made snide remarks to one of our kitchen aids, as she is on a diet and trying to lose weight. She is not really fat or anything, but she wants to lose some weight. And we just hired a new kitchen aid, and she just graduated cooking school. You would think in his eyes, the sun and moon revolves around her. She is going to be a backup cook if needed. Now here is the thing, he tells the head cook that this kitchen aid could do a better job than her, and he has never even eaten anything that this aid cooked, well she has not cooked for us yet. But he thinks she can do a better job. Just because she went to school for cooking.

And here is another example of his being mean to staff. We have one lady she is a part time kitchen aid and she cleans one day a week. She went into work, and 15 minutes into her shift, she went to the kitchen to ask another kitchen aid a question. All the kitchen aids do housekeeping as well. Which is residents rooms as well as the common areas. Well boss man came in and started to get an attitude with her, and they did get into a tiff. That was last Friday. Now today is Monday and he told her he was going to write her up for insubordination . And dismiss her for 2 weeks, and she would lose money. Unless she apologized to him in front of the other staff that were there working.
So she had no other choice , but to say she was sorry in front of the other 2 staff people that were working.

I think this was so wrong, and very unprofessional of him. I think the write up was enough. But he decided to embarrass her as well. Even though he is the one that started the whole thing, which I won't get into here.
The thing is when he is having a bad day, he takes it out on staff. Except one member of the staff, who is one of the cooks, and he is married to one of the board members daughter. This man can do no wrong, and boss man would never say anything to him, because then boss man would get fired.

Now lets talk about me and boss man. I will not pat myself on the back here, but I know how to handle boss man. I can read him, and tell what kind of mood he is in, and what I can say and not say to him. I walk on egg shells some days. I know it is wrong, but I do. I always agree with him. And never do anything to feed into his bad moods. As luck would have it I have never been yelled at or been in trouble with him. If he comes to me with something I may or may not of done wrong, we discuss it, and I make a point of not getting defensive or making excuses.
Another thing that I do is keep my head down and mouth shut, when he is in one of these moods. That way I won't feed into it, and give him something to bitch about. And it works well for me, even though in my mind I am thinking what I really would like to say, but it would do no good, because he always has to be right.
But also on the other hand I am his right hand person, because when he is away on the weekend.

And I have had to handle plenty of situations, which required judgement calls. Things like major leaking ceilings, a car ran into our building in the middle of the night. Residents that we should never have let move into the home. There have been so many things in the time that I have worked there.

So perhaps today I may be ranting, yes I admit it. But to be honest I have never worked for anyone that treated staff the way that he does. And if anyone is reading this. Please leave a comment with your thoughts.
